As you drive along Kukulcan Boulevard past world-class hotels and supermalls on the narrow strip of land known as Isla Cancun, it is hard to imagine that just a few decades ago this tiny island was a deserted sandy spit visited only by local fisherman. In the 1970s, the Mexican government initiated an ambitious plan to turn the thin sandbar just off the cost of the Yucatan Peninsula into a fun, glamorous and trendy vacation hot spot.

AAA Four Diamond awards are obviously given with more frequency than Five Diamond, but the achievement is still enthusiastically celebrated.
